The Dubai Metro is a metro network "driverless,” fully mechanical system that is under construction in Dubai, UAE. The network will have two lines whose operation will be underground in the city center and on elevated viaducts elsewhere on double tracks. The first phase of the network being built by Dubai Rapid coupling (DURL), a Japanese consortium led by Mitsubishi Company, while the system "driverless" will be designed and put into operation by automating the transportation solutions of Alcatel Canada. The department of public transportation in the city of Dubai will operate the Dubai Metro. The Dubai Metro system will be fully automated rail system of the worlds longest. The Metro inaugurated in 2009.
Planning of the Dubai Metro began under the directive of Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum who expected other projects to attract 15 million visitors to Dubai in 2010. The combination of a fast growing population (expected to reach 3 million by 2017) and severe traffic congestion necessitated the construction of an urban rail system to provide additional public transportation capacity, relieve motor traffic, and provide infrastructure for further development.
